The competition pool at Expo Center has been closed since September 2025. Every day it stays closed, our community loses a little more of what makes this place special.
Expo Pool was opened in 1932 for the Los Angeles Olympics, where it hosted swimming, diving, water polo, and pentathlon. It has been in almost continuous public use ever since.
For nearly a century, this 50-meter pool has trained generations of Angelenos — swim clubs, school teams, and the local kids who grew up here and later came back as lifeguards and coaches. It's one of the few full-size public competition pools in this part of Los Angeles, and one with a direct line back to the city's Olympic history.
In September 2025, the pool's heaters needed to be replaced. During the week the water wasn't being recirculated, the pool drained almost completely in just four days — a sign of a serious leak. The competition pool has been closed ever since, while the adjacent Family Pool remains open.
Nearly a year later, there's still no public timeline for repairs. Every month that passes without a clear commitment from the city is a month closer to this pool being quietly deprioritized for good. We don't think that should happen without a fight.
The Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks board is meeting to discuss city facilities, and this is our chance to be heard.

The closure of the competition pool has impacted our entire community. I learned to swim, made amazing friends, and trained to become a lifeguard in this pool. I grew up jumping off the diving board and coming to the pool parties. I am saddened by the closure of the competition pool, and I want to do everything in my power to see it opened again.
